I’ve been working on ships for a while now, and as a result there are a fair few Spanish ports which I know like the back of my own hand. Mahón, Menorca, is not one of them. In fact, I’ve only been able to explore this pretty little city once, for approximately three hours. October in Menorca is beautiful, but I’m not going to pretend to be an expert. I have no tips for you, other than perhaps to purchase a pair of Menorcan sandals while you’re there. (Just make sure they’re the real deal.)

The day we docked in Mahón was a gorgeously sunny day right at the end of October. Considering it was so late in the season, the weather was perfect, and had we had time to go to a beach I wouldn’t have hesitated to jump straight into the sea. But alas, pals. It wasn’t to be.
Instead, I took my camera and headed straight into the streets of the little city to see what I could stumble across. The vibe here is way more laid back than on the party island of Ibiza or the far more bustling glamorous Mallorca. Mahón has a relaxed, boho chic air about it, with narrow, clean streets slanted with beams of sunlight. I’m sure that at the height of the summer the island is far busier, but in late October in Menorca, the mood was an altogether rather chilled out affair.
Old couples stopped in the street to chat, children skipped home from school, and the odd cat lolloped in the shade, revelling in the early Autumn glow of the sun. It’s an idyllic atmosphere, and whilst I can’t speak for the city during the rest of the year, on this particular day it seemed that this is not a place that bows down to tourists. And for that, I’m a fan.
